The human papillomavirus (HPV) triples the risk of the most common form of oesophageal cancer, a study by researchers at the University of New South Wales has found.
The cancer, known as oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is usually diagnosed late and thus has a very high mortality rate.
The findings could help develop vaccinations against OSCC in areas where it is most prevalent, including China, South Africa and Iran.
