NASA is aiming the Hubble Telescope at a crater on the moon to observe the transition of Venus.
The telescope is unable to stare directly at the sun so instead will use the moon as a mirror in order to detect the small imprint of the planet’s atmospheric make-up in the reflected light. NASA is using the transition of Venus as a proxy attempt for the viability of this method in predicting life on Earth-like planets.
The June 5-6 transition will be the last chance to measure the transit of Venus this century, as the next occurrence will not be until 2117.
