Using mathematical models and sophisticated recording techniques, researchers have discovered how individual neurons function within the brain’s visual cortex.
These highly specialised neurons, located in the medial superior temporal (MST) area, respond selectively to observed patterns of motion, such as expansion, rotation, and deformation. Until now, the computations underlying this behaviour were not understood.
This research provides insight into how we process visual information to figure out when something is moving towards us or when we are about to head into a collision.
