Sea level rise and shoreline retreat are the two key factors predicted to cause an increase in flood risk in the future.
A new review of relevant science on climate change by Virginia Tech University and Columbia University found that a rising sea level will have a profound effect on changing coastlines, resulting in an increase of flooding from tropical cyclones.
Climate change was also found to explain 35-45% of tropical cyclone activity over the period on historical record.
