The effectiveness of corticosteroid injections as a treatment for tennis elbow has been challenged by a new study.
Research found that treating patients with physiotherapy and steroid injection didn’t reduce recurrence or have a long-term effect on pain or quality of life.
While steroid injections did result in initial benefits, there was a more than 70% chance of recurrence of injury after two months, as well as delayed healing.
Results also showed steroid injections produced higher recurrence rates than a placebo injection, suggesting that patients receiving steroids might resume normal activity levels too soon.
