People who come out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual in a supportive environment experience real psychological benefits, according to research from the University of Rochester. They feel less anger, are less depressed, and have higher self-esteem.
In contrast, facing a hostile response cancels out the benefits. Being closeted also poses serious negative psychological risks.
The findings underscore the importance of creating workplaces and other social settings that are accepting of all people, but especially gay, lesbian or bisexual individuals, says co-author Richard Ryan.
