Emma Rowe

Emma Rowe is a Senior Research Fellow at Deakin University, and her research focuses on public education, policy and practice. Emma's research has held a long-term interest in the reform of public education, school segregation and marketisation. In 2021, Emma received an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) to study philanthropy in public education and how this impacts policy, practice and governance (2021-2024). She is a Fulbright Scholar (2020) and completed a residency at Indiana University, hosted by Professor Christopher Lubienski in 2022. She continues to serve as a Research Fellow at the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University. She was an invited guest lecturer to Yale University USA, Melbourne University Australia in 2022, and is actively involved with a research team at Aarhus University Copenhagen. Emma’s work is regularly featured in leading Australian media, including newspaper and television. She publishes in Q1 journals including Journal of Education Policy, Comparative Education, the International Journal of Educational Research, amongst others. Emma’s work was recently included in Special Issues put together by Professor Stephen Ball (2022) and Dr Diego Santori (2022). She currently serves as a lead editor for Journal of Education Policy and previously an Associate Editor for Critical Studies in Education, highly ranked journals in sociology of education. She is on the editorial board for the International Studies in Sociology of Education. Emma’s work has won numerous awards including the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Qualitative Research SIG (2015); Best Paper Award (2020) by Springer; and early-career researcher award at Deakin University (2016). She has presented within featured symposiums at conferences in Australia, Britain, US and Japan.
