Professor of Entrepreneurship, IÉSEG School of Management

Johan Bruneel joined IESEG as Professor of Entrepreneurship in September 2018 and is also Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at KU Leuven. In 2003, Johan started as a researcher at Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School and Ghent University. From 2005 to 2009, Johan worked towards a PhD in Management Science with an fellowship from the Intercollegiate Center for Management Science. Johan further enhanced his research skills during stays at Marshall School of Business (US), Nottingham University Business School (UK), Imperial College Business School (UK), and ETH Zurich (Ch).

His research projects can be grouped in three related areas: international entrepreneurship, strategic entrepreneurship, and social entrepreneurship. His work has been published in leading strategy and entrepreneurship journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Research Policy, amongst others. He is also a regular contributor at the key conferences in management (Academy of Management), strategy (Strategic Management Society), and entrepreneurship (Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference).

Johan is an experienced teacher in Entrepreneurship and Business Planning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His teaching centers around the different elements of analysing a business case including market assessment, industry analysis, protection strategy, business model design, and financing. Next to teaching, Johan has extensive experience in coaching entrepreneurs who are in the process of developing a business plan. This involves close interaction with the entrepreneurs to discuss and draw conclusions and implications from data collected through primary and secondary sources.
