Katharine Donato

I am a Sociologist and Demographer who studies international migration. One area of my research focuses on Mexico-U.S. migration and examines how immigration policy has affected the lives of immigrants in the United States and return migrants in Mexico. I have also written about the health consequences of Mexico-U.S. migration; immigrant parent involvement in U.S. schools; deportation and its effects for immigrants; the consequences of the great recession for Mexican workers; and gender and migration. I have a forthcoming book, Gender and International Migration: From Slavery to Present, that will be published by the Russell Sage Foundation in 2015 (with Donna Gabaccia at the University of Toronto). Currently, I am finishing several papers that focus on the migration of children from Mexico and Latin America, emphasizing their overall risks of migration and the ways in which they cross the border. I am also analyzing new household data that examine whether and how migration is a response to environmental stress in Bangladesh.
