Mike trained as a General Paediatrician in the UK but worked in Kenya for over 20 years supported by a series of Wellcome Trust research fellowships. Early in this period he gained a MD from the University of Cambridge. He became a Professor in 2010 at the University of Oxford and a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2013. In 2004 he started the Child and Newborn Health Group in collaboration with Kenya's Ministry of Health and the University of Nairobi. This transitioned in 2011 to the broader Health Services Unit also based in Nairobi . Mike’s team has developed interventions used and uses a range of methodologies spanning statistical modeling to ethnography in research aimed at improving hospital care for children and newborns. Mike also leads the Oxford Health Systems Research Collaboration (OHSCAR). Together with Kenyan partners this team is examining system strategies to improve care quality and safety more generally.
