Nadia Prokopchuk

Nadia grew up in rural Saskatchewan and received her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in curriculum studies and second language education. The first twenty years of her teaching career were spent as a K-12 language teacher, curriculum writer, and school division administrator. This was followed by a career with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education as a language education consultant and Senior Program Manager for English as an Additional Language (EAL). After retiring from the ministry in 2016, Nadia joined the College of Education to lead the development of a new online certificate program, the Post-Degree Certificate in EAL Education.

Nadia is a member of several professional and cultural organizations that support EAL education, multilingual education and cultural diversity. Nadia has competed two terms as a University of Saskatchewan Senator and a decade of service to the Saskatchewan-Ukraine Relations Government Advisory Committee.

Nadia has developed 20 provincial curriculum documents, and authored four EAL courses for the College of Education, University of Saskatchewan. She has also written several papers on EAL education and language education, and prepared two teaching resources for Holodomor (Ukrainian Famine-Genocide) education.

Long-term research interests include K-12 language education, EAL teacher education, bilingualism and translanguaging, and multicultural education. Nadia's current research is focused on language assessment using a Common Framework of Reference (CFR) for languages. Recent presentations include the Saskatchewan Teachers of EAL Conference (Regina), Principals’ Short Course (Saskatoon), Ukrainian Bilingual Teachers' Workshop (Edmonton), TESOL International Conference (Atlanta USA, 2019) and the Multiculturalism in Education Conference (University of Alberta, 2021).
