Phil has mostly worked for the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC, now part of UK Research and Innovation), based at UEA as a programme Science Coordinator. His main expertise is in ocean biogeochemistry and global climate change - and what we can do about it.
Recent activities have included national coordination of the UK Ocean Acidification research programme, the Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry programme, and the UK Greenhouse Gas Removal programme, all with co-funding between one or more Research Councils and government departments. Phil has been a lead author for UN reports on climate geoengineering, ocean fertilization and ocean acidification, and for the IPCC Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.
Phil has given many media interviews on climate change, and his wide-ranging publications have achieved more then 3,100 citations.
